Chapelle Saint-Julien

This chapel is the oldest religious building in Saint-Marcel. Constructed a bit out of the village, on a terrace overlooking the valley of the Rhône, the chapel dates from the 11th century.
Its location is not fortuitous. Served by the prior of Saint-Marcel, the chapel was a popular centre of devotion. At first the building was larger. The nave has been truncated, leaving a space at the front that gives it a certain charm. On the inside there was a painting that now has dissapeared, representing Saint-Julien de Brioude to whom it was also dedicated. An old legend about the chapel still resides in there : whenever children cry, put their heads into the holes between the stones of the wall with the door and, as if it were a miracle, the silence does return. Sold during the French Revolution, the chapel was used as a barn. The chapel nowadays is private property. The association Friends of Saint-Julien have recently renovated it, preventing its downfall.
