Coulées basaltiques

Remarkable natural site - Basalt columnar.
Of volcanic origin, the Coiron has the shape of an oak leaf, formed by basalt
flows during volcanic eruptions that occurred.
It stretches from the Escrinet pass to the Rhône Valley and dominates the limestone lands of the lower Vivarais.

More information

It stands out very clearly in the landscape by its black cliffs which we call Basaltic Organs.
We will find them near our villages like St jean le Centenier, St Pons, Mirabel,… You just have to look at the landscape to find them.
Here the basalt organs which form vertically when the lava cools are clearly visible.
The slower the cooling, the more regular the prisms (organs) are.
