Church of San Samonta

Opening hours: Du 01/01 au 31/12

Priory of the 10th century and Romanesque church of the 11th century.

More information

The church overlooks the "grotte [cave] de Lourdes" with its famous healing wate. Ex-votos [voting offerings] near the altar remind us of the devotion that animated this place (it is said that miracles really have happened here!).
It was built on the spot where the hermit Montanus had its second refuge, on the outside of the village in the direction of Larnas. The Romanesque building is composed of two distinct parts : a chapel in the south presumably dating from the end of the 11th century, and a larger chapel in the north of the first half of the 12th century. The latter has an extraordanary architecture adapted to the topography of the place and respecting the sobriety of the Cistercians at the same time. At the end of the 12th century, the two chapels were being linked together thanks to a beautiful porche.
