Sanilhac

Sanilhac is 8 km from Largentière. Its original name, "Sanu Locus", suggests that it was "a saintly, sane place". The village and its surrounding hamlets are located among beautiful chestnut groves and woods.

More information

Saint Pierre church, in the village centre, is open to the public. It was built on the remains of a former 12th century Roman church.
Not far from the village, 780 m up, opposite the Tanargue chain, is the "Tour de Brison" tower.
When it was built in the 12th century, it used to be connected underground to the Mount Brison castle, whose ruins can be seen nearby.
The association "friends of the Tour de Brison" renovated the tower in the 1900s. It is now used as a watchtower to prevent fires.
A legend says that every year the devil comes and takes a stone away from the tower.
From there is a fabulous view of the Tanargue, the Ventoux Mount, the Alps and Mont Blanc on a clear day.
At the crossroads of Sanilhac and Laurac, a place called Peyrepuride, there is a sign and a sculpture of the devil, which recalls the Tour de Brison legend.
The castle of Versas was built in the 15th century. The front part and the octagonal tower are in Renaissance style. It is a private home, open to the public once a year on "heritage day", as well as many other beautiful private places in France.
