The Tour of Tanargue: an immersion in the heart of a wild massif
Nestled along the watershed divide, between Mediterranean and mountain influences, the Tanargue massif stretches across the heart of the Monts d’Ardèche Regional Natural Park. This unspoiled area, shaped by agropastoral traditions, offers a 62 km route divided into 4 stages—perfect for an immersive adventure.
Stage 1: From Largentière, the trail winds along the Roubreau stream before climbing up to the Tower of Brison, where you’ll enjoy an exceptional panorama. After a technical descent, it reaches the Beaume River and the Pont du Gua.
Stage 2: The route follows ancient mule tracks and gradually gains altitude, transitioning from Mediterranean scrubland to mountain landscapes. Between granite chaos and conifer forests, the passage over the Col des Cayras reveals sweeping views as far as Mont Lozère, before arriving in Loubaresse.
Stage 3: The longest, but also one of the most spectacular. The trail follows a ridge line between heathland and forests, offering breathtaking panoramas. After crossing the Cham du Cros stream, it descends towards chestnut groves before reaching La Croix du Coulet.
Stage 4: This final section highlights built heritage, passing through Joannas and its castle. The descent continues towards Chalabrège, then follows the Ligne River, accompanying the final steps back to Largentière.
A unique itinerary, blending raw nature and characterful villages, to be experienced as a multi-day hike!
