Audio tour: the sound reels

Immerse yourself in accounts of working-class life in Chirols and the thread-reeling industry in Pont de Veyrières. This self-guided tour, accessed via a QR code, features 10 wooden panels shaped like large spools, each offering an audio recording lasting between 3 and 7 minutes.

You can listen to the recordings in the order of the reels or in any order you like, either using one of the MP3 players available at the Ecomuseum of the Moulinage (during opening hours and periods) or by scanning the QR codes with your smartphone (and, ideally, with headphones for better sound quality).

The Audio Reels form part of the “Ça (me) travaille!” project, co-organised by the association L’Œuvrière (the Chirols Moulinage collective) and the theatre company Collectif Torsion. Since its inception, the project has received support from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region as part of the “Mémoires du travail des 20ème et 21ème siècle” initiative, co-organised by the DRAC AURA, as well as from the Ardèche department, the Ardèche des Sources et Volcans Community of Communes, the municipality of Chirols and ACECO.

The “Ça (me) travaille!” project was launched in 2019, when the Moulinage collective moved into the former factory to begin its restoration and (re)launch of cultural, artistic and craft activities. “Ça (me) travaille!” aims to explore our relationships with work, employment, volunteering and leisure time, by placing testimonies from the past alongside present-day experiences.

The audio reels are the first permanent output of this major collection project. They were first unveiled as a temporary installation during the “Strass & Truelles” #3 festival and to mark the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Chirols Moulinage Collective. The exhibition has been re-installed to mark Heritage Days 2026 and will remain on display around the Ecomuseum of Silk Reeling’s grounds, in the courtyard of the former factory and in the Pont de Veyrières neighbourhood.

All the audio clips are taken from a collection compiled by Djoo Cuer between 2019 and 2020 (and then in 2024 for reel no. 10). This material also forms part of the podcast “Le Moulinage en Chantier”, broadcast on Fréquence 7.
