From the top of its 4 defensive towers, the castle of la Chèze has dominated and watched over the town of Le Cheylard since the 13th century. Discover 15 rooms of castle life. Self-guided or guided tours, fun and interactive workshops, games evenings.
From mountain castle to middle-class residence:
Built in the 13th century on a dominant strategic position, Château de la Chèze was constantly extended and modified over the centuries.
During the Wars of Religion, it attracted the covetousness of both Catholics and Huguenots, who took it in turns to control and watch over the town of Le Cheylard. Abandoned after the Revolution, it was sold in 1862 to a prominent man, who transformed it into a comfortable pleasure residence.
Tragically, on 6 July 1944, it was set on fire by German troops for hosting the maquis. Left in a state of ruin, it was admirably rebuilt from 1989 to 2018 by the volunteers of the ASPB Association, supported and aided by the municipality and numerous partners.
