Eglise Saint-Martin
The church stands out with its elegant choir and spacious nave, faithfully preserving their original Romanesque style, thereby creating a remarkably harmonious ensemble.
The original church, probably Romanesque, was partially destroyed at the end of the 16th century during the Wars of Religion.
The remains, still clearly visible on the north side, suggest that it was about the same size as the present-day church. It was surrounded by a large cemetery. In the 17th century, the population of Désaignes is thought to have reached nearly 4,000 inhabitants.
The new church was rebuilt in several stages. The choir section was completed first, around 1636. Twenty years later, in 1656, the building was extended to double its length.
This date (1656) is engraved inside the church on a carved stone in the vault of the right side aisle.
The bell tower was built in 1657, a date carved into one of its stones, marking the completion of the reconstruction. In 1668, however, the bell tower was raised by about 3 metres.
Further restoration work was carried out during the 19th century, particularly on the façade.
The church has also undergone recent restoration work.
