Garden of Fontfreyde

The garden is irrigated by a cold spring that emerges from a rocky banc at a constant temperature of 13 °C.
A stone swale leads the water towards six “gourgues”, deep basins of about forty centimeters deep and with a diameter of about one meter. This irrigation system, very common in the South of France, makes it possible to lead the water calmly to different spots in the garden.
This garden of Frontfreyde is a nice example of the practical sense of men working their land. The agronomist Olivier de Serres tells us very accurately about the use of this irrigation system in his published book “Théâtre d’agriculture et ménage des champs” from 1600.
