Œuvre De l'autre côté de Stéphane Thidet – Le Partage des Eaux

The Chartreuse de Bonnefoy was founded by monks in 1156. De l'autre côté plays with the changing light. One day discreet, another brilliant, other times sparkling. Work by Stéphane Thidet as part of the Partage des Eaux exhibition.
The façade of the former Chartreuse de Bonnefoy is set in the middle of a rugged landscape, like a breach hidden in the curves of the Monts d'Ardèche. It looks like a jewel in a jewel box that would jealously like to keep it all to itself. This fragment of the façade seems to stand up by magic, and hints at the scale the building must have had before it almost disappeared.

Stéphane Thidet used a fairly minimalist approach to accentuate the surreal nature of the site: seven large mirrors have been inserted where a door and windows once stood. Slightly tilted, they reflect the landscape that literally penetrates the stone embrasures, creating an unsettling impression of transparency.

This work, at one with the building, plays on the effect of transparency while reflecting the passage of time and the seasons. Is it the front that is reflected or the back that shines through the play of light? Where is the “other side” of the title? Nothing is less certain…

Born in 1974, Stéphane Thidet lives in Paris and works in Aubervilliers. A graduate of the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-arts de Paris in 2002, he has taught at the École supérieure des beaux-arts de Nantes Métropole since 20
