Prieuré de Charrière
Part of a convent, the church Saint Pierre de Charrière was built in the XV century on the remains of a Romanesque church dating back to the X or XII centuries.
The vaulted choir of this Gothic chapel still contains wall paintings from the 15th and 17th centuries.
The convent was rebuilt at the end of the 16th century after the Wars of Religion and their destruction.
Guided tours of the Charrière convent complex offer an insight into Franciscan rural architecture and the history of this convent, which is closely linked to the life and memory of the region and the village of Châteauneuf de Galaure.
This remarkable architectural ensemble, located on the left bank of the Galaure river, has been undergoing conservation and restoration work for several years, and has now become a place of entertainment open to the public and accessible to visitors. The work will continue with the active support of the “Patrimoine Castelneuvois” association.
The Charrière site, a complete Franciscan convent in the heart of the countryside, is a rare site in the Auvergne Rhône Alpes region.
Since 2017, the University of Lyon Lumière has been carrying out a 3-year study of the site, in order to identify the periods and phases of construction, as well as the purpose of each of the rooms and the organization of the religious community occupying the site.
In 2022, the “restoration of the lost paintings in the choir” project will be completed. The project won the silver award in the “social impact” category of the Geste d’Or competition. https://www.legestedor.com/concours/concours-2022/heritech/
This year, the restored paintings can be viewed in augmented reality with 3D glasses.
Visits Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 3pm to 5pm during zone A school vacations.
Outside school vacations, visits are possible at the same times, but by appointment.

From 01/01 to 30/12/2026 on Monday, Thursday and weekends between 3 pm and 5 pm. Closed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
