La plaine d'Aurèle : from dolmens to blockhouses ; Neolithic /war 39-45
In 1942 the German army settles on the land and starts to build different constructions, radars and cannons.
They supervise every 50 km surface of the valley of the Rhône for air attacks in the area between the Mediterranean Sea and Lyon. In 1944, when the defeated Germans abruptly leave their basis, they blow up almost everything. They put land mines and blow up the « bloc-houses ». Today there are still some half ruined walls left. Parts of the ground are demined. Several excavations have been done to find war ammunition, pieces of shell, etc. The German military base is no longer in use since August 1944. The NATO afterwards replaced some radars but in 1956, when De Gaulle leaves the NATO, the base loses its military function.
On this same land there is Neolithic vestige in the days when first farmers settled there. It was also a place dedicated to the cultural funeral practice. Many people have been burried under dolmens.
An old lane crossing la plaine d’Aurèle lused to link Le Puy en Velay to Aigues Mortes, a very busy road at the time.
