Grotte Chauvet 2 – Ardeche

Grotte Chauvet 2 – thrills and emotion guaranteed inside a perfect replica cave

Unique in the world, this extraordinary site takes a moving approach to the decorated cave of Pont-d’Arc – the Grotte Chauvet – through an exact reproduction of wall paintings more than 36,000 years old. Largest replica cave in the world, Grotte Chauvet 2 provides a total immersion in Ardechois prehistory through an exact reproduction covering 3,500 metres.

Step back into the world of Paleolithic ancestors, not only through the replica cave, but also in the Aurignacian Gallery, a fun museum space with demonstrations for all ages at weekends and in school holidays.  Set in 12 acres of green oak forest – a typical local tree – the site is open all year round.

10th anniversary of Unesco award and 30th anniversary of its discovery

To celebrate this special year, a new evening light and sound show on mondays and thursdays takes place from 15th July to 29th August. Grotte Chauvet 2, open all year

The history of art

In 1994 three cavers – Chauvet, Brunel and Hillaire – made a discovery that was to rock the known history of art and humankind.  By finding a vast underground cavity untouched for 21,500 years, they also discovered masterpieces 36,000 years old and still in remarkable condition.  Prehistory perfectly preserved.

Grotte Chauvet – also known as the Decorated Cave of Pont d’Arc – was given UNESCO World Heritage Site status on 22 June 2014.

A wealth of activities

Discover the techniques of wall art and try your hand at drawing on rock just as our ancestors did.  Or maybe experience life in the camps of the ‘hunter-gatherers’ of 36,000 years ago.  The staff at Grotte Chauvet 2 run all kinds of workshops such as how to light a fire without a match or lighter.  A fun way to satisfy anyone’s curiosity.

A fascinating museum

The Aurignacian Gallery is an interactive museum split into themes: wall art, Ardeche 36,000 years ago, and our prehistoric ancestors. Whether before or after your cave visit, don’t miss the thrill of walking amongst extinct animals. And take in one of the temporary exhibition that run throughout the year.
