Cinema : Ardèche, the movie

The Ardèche revealed: travelling the roads of this mountainous department, John and Gabriel set out to meet the people who share a special bond with this land. With the film crew in attendance.

Through their own stories, Gabriel and John – filmmakers born in Brazil and India respectively – explore a question that is both personal and universal: how does a place become a home? Their answer lies in the Ardèche, a land where they have put down roots, despite their distant origins. Here, they share a deep, almost visceral connection with the soil that unites them.

As their journey unfolds, they cross paths with men and women – whether born in the Ardèche or having made it their home – all of whom share the same spirit of generosity. From the walls of a mountain bar lovingly restored, to Michelin-starred chef Anne-Sophie Pic’s intimate reflections on her local ties, and the meticulous craftsmanship of dedicated artisans, each encounter reveals a facet of the Ardèche identity. From the prehistoric murals of the Chauvet Cave – testaments to 36,000 years of history – to the enduring traditions that still animate the department, their exploration paints a portrait of a region that is both steeped in history and resolutely vibrant.

Whether behind the wheel, in a canoe or suspended in a hot-air balloon, the two filmmakers go beyond the clichés of picturesque landscapes. Their film is not merely a tourist tour, but an emotional immersion designed to help us understand that invisible bond that ties us to a place.
