Eclipses: Grand Astronomical Spectaculars, Rich in Lessons About Humankind.
BY PIERRE THOMAS – Duration 1 hour 30 minutes, Professor Emeritus of Geology and Professor at the ENS of Lyon
On August 12th, around 8:30 pm, there will be a total solar eclipse in northern Spain (95% partial in Balazuc). This is an opportunity to review this astronomical phenomenon that has always fascinated, and even worried, humankind. After reviewing the astronomical mechanisms of lunar and solar eclipses, we will focus at length on solar eclipses. In particular, to prepare for August 12, 2026, we will see how to enjoy the spectacle, what to do and what not to do, what the risks are—certainly real but greatly exaggerated and misunderstood by the media (due to the precautionary principle)… Then we will discuss the contribution of eclipses to astronomy.
