Exhibition: "Mosaic Tiles: A Vivaroise Creation"

Mosaic tiles are a form of decoration used on floors and sometimes walls, found all over the world. They originated in Viviers. In fact, it was two residents of Viviers—Etienne Larmande and Louis-François Damon—who filed patents in the 1850s and 1860s for the manufacture of polychrome tiles made of compressed cement without firing.

The equipment used to manufacture the tiles was designed and produced, until the 1970s, by the Lachave and later Greffe companies in Viviers. This equipment was exported to tile manufacturers everywhere.

On display are: historical documents, examples of finished pieces, promotional materials, photographs, and manufacturing tools… a must-see for anyone interested in learning about the manufacturing technique, the chosen ornamental motifs, and the spread of the process—particularly in Catalonia, Provence, and Morocco— and the current revival of this decorative style.
