Heritage Days: Lecture on the restoration of the local atlas

The municipality of Jaujac possesses a particularly valuable heritage document: its cadastral atlas dating from 1839. A true testament to the history of the area, this work brings together detailed maps of the municipality from the 19th century, showing plots of land, paths, rivers, buildings and landscapes.

After several months of meticulous work, this atlas has just been restored by Julie Tyrlik, a heritage conservator and restorer who has been based in Jaujac since 2021.

A graduate of the Institut national du patrimoine, where she obtained a Master’s degree in heritage restoration specialising in books and graphic arts, Julie Tyrlik works with numerous public and private institutions – libraries, archive services, and national and international museums – to restore and preserve heritage documents and works.

In this talk, she will outline the various stages involved in restoring the municipal cadastral atlas, the techniques used and the challenges associated with conserving such a document.

It will also be an opportunity to take a closer look at this atlas, a veritable ‘snapshot’ of Jaujac in the 19th century. It is a valuable source for understanding the evolution of the village, its hamlets, its paths and its landscapes over time, and is of interest to researchers and historians alike, as well as to local residents curious about their local history.

Thanks to its restoration, this valuable document has been made legible once again and can now be preserved and passed on to future generations.

The event will also provide an opportunity to view a presentation of the work of photographer Gaëtan Pilato.
