Heritage Days: Visit of Thueyts, village of character

Take a guided tour of the characterful village of Thueyts on Heritage Days! You'll be amazed by the richness of its heritage and geology. Prior booking required (places are limited). Length approx. 1h30.

Village of Celtic origin that bore the name of Athogis under the Romans. This is why the inhabitants of Thueyts are now called the Athogians.

Sheltered north by the volcano of Gravenne, Thueyts is built on a lava lake from the volcano of Prat which gives it this particular relief. To find its way, the river Ardèche has dug the magnificent gorges of the Giants Causeway that can be discovered by a remarkable route by browsing the sites of the Maw of Hell, the Devil’s Bridge, the King’s Ladder or the Queen’s ladder.

The village developed at the beginning of the second millennium around its priory linked to the Abbey of Saint Chaffre of Monastier-sur-Gazeille (Haute-Loire). It enjoyed a beautiful period of prosperity from the Renaissance. It remains from this time, throughout the streets of the old town, remarkable testimonies such as the Castle of Blou, Pouget Tower and several mansions.

During these different periods, his activity was dominated by trading, craftsmanship, then arboriculture, silkworm breeding and the textile industry. Today, Thueyts’ business is mainly based on tourism and health.
