The MALABAAAR collective’s creative approach transcends the strict boundaries of a single musical style. Sometimes referred to in programming as afro club, funk groove or afrobeat funk, the project’s music is marked by syncopated rhythms, vigorous brass and a festive energy that strongly engages the audience.
The band includes a blowing section (trombone, saxophones), a dynamic rhythm section (drums/keyboards, bass) and a guitar, giving it a rich, colorful sound texture, conducive to dance while cultivating musical depth.
MALABAAAR’s aesthetic is based on a creative fusion:
music inspired by contemporary African rhythms, with an emphasis on groove and perpetual motion; a syncopated rhythmic base, singing bass and percussive brass; danceable energy, catchy melody lines and inspired improvisations, sophisticated wind arrangements and nuanced harmonies with contagious energy.
With their latest album, Ourselves (March 2025), MALABAAAR is a singular musical formation in the French contemporary music landscape, where the Afro-beat pulse combines with the vitality of funk and the danceable momentum of disco, all articulated by expansive, refined instrumentation. Through a repertoire of original compositions, the group cultivates the art of collective performance, fostering a festive and engaging immersion for the audience.
