Les Hirondelles

Gîte near village of Saint-Remèze, in southern Ardèche, between the Ardèche Gorges and Rhône valley, perfect for those seeking peace and quiet. Leave Saint-Remèze on little road past vineyards and garrigue. After 3 km you'll arrive at the gîte, on 1st floor of farm, at heart of property (no neighbours within 500m) surrounded by lavender fields and white oak trees. No air conditioning but thick stone walls provide good insulation in summer heat and the little stream below the meadow is lovely and cool at night (swimming not possible). Lots to see and do: afternoon naps in shade of 100-year-old plane trees to the sound of cicadas. But there are also many caves, museums to visit, hikes and cycle trips. Don't miss the Ardèche Gorges and Pont d'Arc and climb to the top of the Dent de Rez (719m), the highest point in the region with wonderful views over the Rhône valley and Cévennes. Don't miss the lavender distillery, the only one in the department. 1st floor gîte. Living room with lounge area and open-plan fitted kitchen area. Bedroom (double bed). Shower room/WC. East-facing covered terrace on ground floor. The owner, a keen astronomer, will be happy to share his knowledge of stars with you (site is ideal for observing the sky and constellations as there is no light pollution at night).
