Vogüé : a village with outstanding character

Opening hours: Du 01/01 au 31/12

A sight for sore eyes…Vogüé seems to be set in the cliff like a gemstone gripped in the sun-kissed limestone…

More information

It is one of the most famous and picturesque images of the Lower Vivarais. First departure point from the descent of the Gorges of the Ardèche, Vogüe also enjoys a rich historical past with vestiges of five chateaux, all preceding the 14th century. One of them, considerably reworked in the 17th century, dominates the chateau market town.

The castle : The castle from the 15th century, originally included three main buildings in a u-shape flanked by circular towers. It was highly reworked in the 17th century. However, the 15th century site encompassed an initial dungeon whose vestiges allow us to date the building back to the turn of the 12th and 13th century.
The vast reworking in the 17th century gives the castle is current appearance: wide windows, balconies, hanging garden, making it a pleasant residence. Facades are listed on the Inventory of Historic Monuments; the castle is today open to the public and has become an exhibition area.

Roman chapel with its stained-glass windows by Alfred Manessier : Collection by Jean Chièze (1898-1975), wood engraver
Room of the Etats de Vivarais.
La roche sur Vogüé : Limestone Rock from the Mesozoic Era, from the period of Oxonian Jurassic. The mechanical action of the water hollowed out gorges in the limestone rock.
