A classified site, Lake Issarlès fills a former volcanic crater, or maar. It covers a surface area of 90ha (240 acres) and goes down to the extraordinary depth of more than 108m.

On this site, you will find what is left of the Bonnefoy Carthusian monastery, which was built in 1156 on a land given by Lord Guillaume de Fay, also known as "Jourdain". The Carthusian order had chosen this site for the construction of a new monastery due to its isolation.
